Mill of Keir

The Mill of Keir sits quietly beside the River Teith, just outside Stirling, and it's one of those places that catches you off guard. You won't find queues or visitor centres here - it's simply an old watermill, sturdy and real, the kind of structure that feels like it's grown from the landscape rather than been plonked on it. The mill itself dates back centuries, and you can still see the workings if you get close enough, though access varies depending on who's managing it at any given time. It's genuinely worth a stop if you're walking the riverside paths in this part of Perthshire, but go in without expecting a full morning's entertainment. Twenty minutes to half an hour covers it properly, unless you're the type who enjoys sitting on the bank and sketching or photographing the stonework. The setting is lovely - the water, the old stone, trees framing it all - and it makes sense as a spot for a quick detour when you're based at somewhere like Craighead Howf, five miles away. The caravan park gives you easy access to the whole Stirling area, and the Mill fits neatly into a broader afternoon exploring the riverside. Best visited when the light's good for photography, and avoid if rain's turned the paths into mud. History enthusiasts will appreciate it more than most; small kids might get restless unless they're keen on exploring old buildings.
