Mill Lane Recreation Ground

A fairly modest nature reserve tucked away between Wantage and the surrounding farmland, Mill Lane Recreation Ground is the sort of place locals know but visitors often walk straight past. It's essentially a small pocket of managed green space with a mix of grassland and woodland - nothing dramatic, but worth a quiet hour if you're camping nearby at Lorne Hill Farm or Evelyns Garden Glamping.

The main draw is a gentle loop walk through the site. You get bird watching opportunities, some decent wildflower patches depending on season, and enough trees to feel like you've actually stepped away from things. It's dead flat walking, so zero drama there - perfect if you've got kids who aren't quite ready for the Downs or simply fancy a potter rather than a proper hike.

Families with young children will get the most from this place, especially if the weather's halfway decent. There's space for them to run about without disappearing. Keen naturalists and photographers might find the bird life worth their time. History buffs, honestly, won't find much to grip them.

It's free to access and you can really spend as little or as long as you like - twenty minutes for a quick circuit or an hour if you're genuinely interested in the wildlife. There's no information board that I saw, so managing expectations is key. Don't expect Ashridge or anything remotely that impressive. But as a break from the caravan or a morning constitutional before heading to Wantage proper for lunch? It does the job.
