Mill Gardens

The River Avon runs through Warwick, and Mill Gardens sits along its banks like something the town almost forgot about. It's a proper nature reserve, not a manicured tourist spot - think wild margins, water plants doing their thing, and paths that wind alongside the water rather than cutting straight through it.

You're looking at a mix of riverside walk and actual wildlife habitat. Kingfishers turn up if you're lucky and patient. The gardens were historically tied to the old mills that once powered the town, though nowadays it's all about letting nature recover. It's free to wander, and there's no gate or visitor centre to navigate - just access onto the paths from Warwick town centre. Allow an hour for a gentle meander, longer if you've brought binoculars and time to kill.

This works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Knight's Village at Warwick Castle is just a couple of miles away - and want something low-key between bigger attractions. It's not a destination in itself, frankly. Kids will manage thirty minutes before asking what's next. But walkers and birdwatchers will find it genuinely rewarding, especially spring and early summer when migration's on and the riverside plants are busy.

Warwick itself is the draw - castle, town centre, decent shops. Mill Gardens is the thing you do while you're there, not the reason to go.
