Milecastle 57

The Romans built this fortlet around 128 AD, and you can still make out the stone foundations on the Northumberland moorland west of Carlisle. Milecastle 57 was one of 80-odd small forts dotted along Hadrian's Wall, each one a day's march apart. What you're looking at is essentially a rectangular outline - about 40 metres across - where soldiers once kept watch over the northern frontier.

The site itself won't take long. Ten minutes walking the perimeter, reading the interpretation board if there is one, and you've got the gist. But it's the context that matters. Stand here facing north and you're literally looking into Scotland, understanding instantly why the Romans thought they needed this. The wall itself runs nearby, though you'll often see more of it at adjacent stretches.

History enthusiasts will want to visit this alongside other milecastles and the wall forts - Carlisle itself has a proper Roman museum worth an hour. Walkers use this as a stop on the Hadrian's Wall Path, which is excellent round here. Families with older kids might find it interesting if they're already exploring the wall; younger children will probably get bored fast without some Roman storytelling beforehand.

It's free and accessible year-round. Allow 15-20 minutes unless you're doing the full walk. Green Acres Caravan Park sits just five miles south - a decent base for tackling this section of the wall methodically across a few days.
