Milecastle 34 (Grindon)

You're standing on a windswept ridge in Northumberland, looking at what remains of a Roman fort that once anchored Hadrian's Wall. Milecastle 34 at Grindon is less dramatic than the wall's showier stretches, but that's rather the point. There are actual stones here - properly substantial ones - not just the landscape outline you get elsewhere.

What you're seeing is a small fortified gatehouse, part of the wall's original defensive system. Soldiers would have stood watch from those turrets, checking movement along one of the empire's most important borders. The site sits about three miles from Hexham, which makes it straightforward to reach without fighting tourist crowds at the busier sections further west.

Historically minded visitors get the most from this one. You need to actually want to stand there and think about what it all meant - the logistics, the cold winters, the isolation. Kids will find it fairly bleak unless they're already hooked on Romans. Plan twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're reading the information carefully.

There's no visitor centre or facilities, just the ruins and the view across the Tyne Valley. It's genuinely free and open whenever you fancy, which is the one proper advantage. If you're camping at Stonehaugh Campsite or Langley Dam Glamping - both excellent bases - this works as a half-hour detour. Worth doing if the weather's decent and you're already chasing the wall. Don't expect revelations, but do expect to stand where Romans actually stood.
