Mile Castle 60

There's something quite moving about standing in front of a crumbling Roman fort in the middle of the Cumbrian countryside. Mile Castle 60 is one of the smaller installations along Hadrian's Wall - a two-thousand-year-old garrison that once housed around thirty soldiers tasked with monitoring this remote frontier. What you find here are substantial stone foundations, sections of the original wall rising to shoulder height, and the clear layout of the fort itself spread across the moorland.

The walk to it matters as much as the site itself. You're looking at open country between Carlisle and the Scottish border, with views that haven't changed much since the Romans packed up and left. The castle sits right on the wall line, so you get proper perspective on the scale of what the Empire built out here. It's a quiet spot - you won't fight crowds, though that does mean no facilities whatsoever.

History enthusiasts will spend a good hour picking over the stones and reading the layout. Families with younger kids might find it a bit windswept and sparse - there's nothing interactive, no visitor centre, just archaeology in situ. Walkers love this stretch of the wall though. From Mile Castle 60, you can plot routes along the wall itself in either direction. Carlisle makes a sensible base, and Green Acres Caravan Park sits just 3.4 miles away if you're planning a longer wall-walking holiday. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though you'll need decent boots and weather-proof kit.
