Mildenhall Hub Pump Track

The pump track at Mildenhall is a proper bit of fun if you've got kids who can ride a bike. It's basically a sealed asphalt circuit with rollers and berms - think of it as a skate park for bicycles, except you don't need to pedal much once you're up to speed. You just shift your weight and pump your way around, building momentum as you go. It takes maybe twenty minutes to get the hang of it, longer if you're determined to master the flow.

Kids aged seven upwards tend to crack on with it straightaway. Younger ones might find it frustrating at first, but give them an afternoon and most of them come good. It's free to use, which is excellent value, and you can rock up whenever you fancy - the track's open access. The surface stays in decent nick most of the year, though winter mud and leaf debris can make it dodgy after heavy rain.

For a family camped at Trelander or Willow Grove Farm, both less than six miles away, this makes a cracking half-day activity that won't eat into your holiday budget. Combine it with a walk around the Mildenhall nature reserve itself - it's proper countryside, all open water and grazing marsh. Near Brandon, so you're well placed for exploring the wider Fenland. Don't expect your teenagers to want to stay for hours, but thirty-year-olds often turn up solo for a proper workout. It scratches a very specific itch.
