Middleton Wood

The path into Middleton Wood is thick with shade and the sound of your own footsteps on the forest floor. It's a proper working woodland just outside Northallerton, the sort of place that feels like it belongs to walkers rather than day-trippers, and that's exactly what makes it worth an afternoon.

You're walking among established broadleaves - oak, ash, beech - with enough undergrowth to feel genuinely wild without being impenetrable. The woodland is managed, so trails are clear enough, though there's nothing manicured about it. Given how close it sits to town, it's remarkably quiet. On a weekday, you might see no one.

This is proper terrain for families with older kids and anyone serious about a woodland walk. Younger children might find it a bit relentless - there's little to stop for, no play equipment, no cafe. Bring a picnic if you want to linger. Allow an hour minimum, though two hours gives you enough time to explore without rushing.

The wood works brilliantly alongside a longer Northallerton-based holiday. If you're staying at Whorlton Pods just down the road, this is an easy morning walk before heading elsewhere in the area. It's not Instagram-famous, which is entirely the point. No entrance fees, no opening hours drama - just turn up and go. Early autumn is lovely, when the light filters through differently. Winter reveals more of the woodland structure too.
