Middleham Castle

The ruins of Middleham Castle rise from the Wensleydale landscape like something out of a Yorkshire history book - and for good reason. This 12th-century fortress was home to Richard III before he became king, and the walls still carry that weight. You'll wander through the keep, climb the narrow stone stairs (mind your head), and stand in chambers where medieval life actually happened. The outer walls give way to open countryside views that remind you why anyone would bother building a castle here in the first place.

It's genuinely absorbing for anyone interested in medieval England or the Wars of the Roses. Kids often find it less engaging than the more complete castles - there's no roof, no furniture, just impressive stonework and imagination. Allow a solid hour if you're reading the information boards, thirty minutes if you're just having a look round. The site is free to wander, though English Heritage membership gets you in properly.

Leyburn sits just two miles away, so you can grab a coffee after and sort out lunch. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Yorkshire Dales or Eastfield Glamping Farm are both minutes away - this fits perfectly into a morning before hitting the Dales proper. The castle works best as part of a wider Wensleydale itinerary rather than a standalone destination, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area.
