Middle Street Meadow

A couple of miles outside Salisbury, Middle Street Meadow is a proper working nature reserve - the sort of place where you'll actually see things rather than just walk through manicured grass. It's a small site, so don't rock up expecting Stonehenge-scale drama, but the wildflower meadows are genuinely worth an hour of your time, especially in late spring and early summer when everything's in bloom.

You'll find it's run by local conservation volunteers, which means the place has real character rather than corporate polish. The meadow itself supports a decent range of orchids and butterflies - bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. The walking is undemanding, making it ideal for families with young kids or anyone who wants a gentle afternoon without actually committing to a full hike.

If you're camping at Bake Farm or Summerlands, this is a cracking spot for a morning wander before heading into Salisbury proper. It won't take all day - couple of hours maximum, including a proper look around - so you'll still have time for lunch or a pub visit. The real value is if you're genuinely interested in wildflowers and local ecology. If you're after dramatic views or big-name attractions, you'll find it a bit quiet. Free entry, as far as I can tell, though it's worth checking ahead as volunteer-run reserves can be a bit fluid with their schedules. Go on a weekday if possible - weekends draw more families and school groups.
