Mid-Suffolk Light Railway - (Dovebrook, Station)

The platforms at Dovebrook are quiet these days, but that's rather the point. The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway is a volunteer-run operation that brings a slice of Edwardian rail travel back to life on summer weekends and special event days. You'll find restored steam and diesel locomotives pulling heritage carriages along a short stretch of track that once connected villages across this corner of Suffolk.

It's a proper bit of railway nostalgia. The station itself is modest - wooden platforms, period signage, a little booking office - but that's exactly what makes it feel authentic. You can wander around the depot, chat with the volunteers who know every detail of every engine, and if you're there on a running day, ride one of the trains. The journey itself is gentle rather than spectacular, but that's fine. It's the ritual of it that matters: the hiss of steam, the rattle of couplings, the smell of hot oil.

Railway enthusiasts will be in their element. Children under about twelve usually enjoy the novelty, though they may find thirty minutes of gentle chugging enough. Adults who grew up with railways, or who simply appreciate the craftsmanship of heritage restoration, will spend longer poking about the engines.

The station is free to wander, though train rides cost a few quid. Check ahead for running dates - they're not daily. Being just outside Eye, it works well as a half-day stop when you're based at Hill Farm Suffolk or Stonham Barns Holiday Park nearby. Worth the detour if rails are your thing; skip it otherwise.
