Micklow Hill

The walk up Micklow Hill from Richmond takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with proper views across Swaledale. It's not a dramatic summit - you won't find a trig point or a cairn - but on a clear day the rolling fells stretch out in every direction and you can pick out the market town below. The route itself is straightforward, mostly field paths and moorland tracks, nothing that'll trouble anyone with reasonable fitness.

This is walkers' terrain. If you're staying at Hewn Yorkshire just down the road near Richmond, it's an obvious afternoon outing - two hours round trip, enough to justify the time without eating into a full day. Families with older children will manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble about the climb back down. The views aren't Pen-y-ghent dramatic, but they're worth the boots on your feet.

Go when the weather's settled. Moorland clouds roll in quick here, and you can lose the vistas in minutes. Early morning or late afternoon light catches the valleys better than midday glare. There's no fee, no facilities up top - just you, the wind, and the Dales rolling away. It's the sort of walk that reminds you why people bother with Yorkshire in the first place.
