Mickerloo Art Gallery and Café

The café here is reason enough to visit on its own, but Mickerloo Art Gallery pulls off that rare trick of being equally good at both. It's tucked away near Chester, which means you're never more than twenty minutes from actual civilisation if the art world doesn't grab you.

Inside, the gallery itself is modest in scale - this isn't the Walker or anything like that. What it does is showcase work by regional and emerging artists, rotating shows that actually feel curated rather than just hung on a wall because space needed filling. The café bit is genuinely well run, proper coffee and the sort of cake that makes you pause mid-bite. You'll spot regulars hunched over laptops, groups on their second pot of tea.

It works best if you're already in the Chester area and fancy a couple of hours pottering about. Families with older kids will manage fine, though under-tens might get restless after forty minutes unless they're genuinely art-minded. History types won't find much here - this is contemporary work, nothing ancient.

If you're camped at Pitch & Canvas or Little Pig Glamping, both within spitting distance, Mickerloo makes a proper rainy-day stop without feeling like a chore. The kind of place that breaks up a park holiday nicely. Worth an afternoon if you're in the area, not worth a special trip on its own.
