Mestag Castle

The ruins of Mestag Castle sit on a windswept stretch of Highland moorland about five miles south of Thurso, and honestly, they're more suggestion than structure these days. What remains is a scatter of stone foundations and a few stubborn wall fragments - the kind of place where you need to squint a bit and let your imagination do the heavy lifting. It's an archaeological site rather than a visitor attraction with interpretation boards, so you'll want to bring some knowledge or curiosity about medieval fortifications if you're going to get much from it.

The setting, though - that's the real draw. This is proper exposed Caithness, all wind-scoured grass and vast sky. If you're staying at Little Croft Highlands just down the road, it's an easy detour for a morning walk and a hunt through history. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will find it worthwhile; families with young kids might lose interest once they've climbed on the stones for twenty minutes.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of - no cafe, no car park, no opening hours to worry about. You just show up. Check locally in Thurso before you visit, as access can shift depending on the season and land management. Allow an hour if you're keen on photography or sketching out how the original castle might have stood; half that if you're just passing through.

It works well as part of a wider Caithness circuit if you're using the area's holiday parks as your base. The landscape around here is the main attraction anyway.
