Merson Park

The Merson Park nature reserve sits just outside Buckie, a working fishing town on the Moray Firth coast, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick lap. You're looking at woodland trails threading through mixed forest - the kind of quiet walking that actually clears your head instead of just getting your steps in. The reserve isn't vast, so you won't spend all day here, but it's genuine habitat for woodland birds and plants rather than a manicured stroll.

Walkers will find the most value, particularly anyone keen on spotting whatever's about seasonally - bring binoculars and a decent field guide if you're serious. It's also fine for families with older kids who can handle uneven ground without needing everything paved and signposted every fifty metres. The woodland floor can be muddy, especially in winter, so proper boots make sense.

Being free and accessible year-round (as far as I can establish), there's no excuse not to slot it into your schedule when staying at nearby Greencraig Pods. The location works well as a morning or late-afternoon stop before or after time at the coast - Buckie itself has some genuine character if you're after fish and chips or a proper coffee. It's not a day-long destination on its own, but paired with other Aberdeenshire walks or a coastal mooch, it fills a gap nicely. Allow an hour or so depending on how much you dawdle and birdwatch.
