Menstrie Castle

A modest tower house standing on the edge of Menstrie village, Menstrie Castle is the sort of place you'll miss if you're not looking for it - which is precisely why it's worth the detour. The castle dates back to the 16th century and was home to Sir William Alexander, the fellow who essentially invented Nova Scotia from his study. The building itself is compact and unshowy, with thick stone walls that tell you everything you need to know about survival in the Scottish Lowlands.

Inside, there's a small museum dedicated to Alexander's curious attempt to establish a Scottish colony across the Atlantic. The exhibits are unpretentious - documents, maps, period objects - and genuinely interesting if you're into colonial history or just fancy understanding how a minor laird became a major player in European expansion plans. It's the kind of place where you spend 45 minutes rather than three hours, which is fine because Stirling - just a short drive away - offers plenty to pad out a day trip.

Families with older kids will get more from this than younger ones; it's not interactive or loud. History enthusiasts will find themselves properly engaged. The castle works brilliantly as a morning stop before heading to Stirling Castle itself, or as a quieter alternative if you want to avoid the crowds that descend on the bigger attraction.
