Mendlesham Woods

The woods around Mendlesham feel properly rural - thick Suffolk woodland with the kind of quiet you don't get near towns. It's a genuine nature reserve rather than a manicured country estate, so expect overgrown paths, proper forest floor, and enough space to actually lose yourself for an afternoon without seeing another soul.

You're walking through mixed broadleaf and conifer woodland, the sort of place where you might spot muntjac deer or hear a woodpecker if you're lucky. There's no visitor centre or marked trails in the traditional sense, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your outlook. I'd say it's brilliant - you get the real thing, not the sanitised version.

This works best for walkers and nature types rather than families wanting a structured outing. Bring proper boots because it gets muddy, and go early morning for the best chance of wildlife. The reserve is free to access, though opening hours aren't formally posted - it's more of a "turn up when you like" situation.

From Eye, it's an easy drive east, making it a natural add-on if you're basing yourself at Hill Farm Suffolk or one of the other holiday parks nearby. Stonham Barns and Goldings are both within twenty minutes, so you could do a morning walk here then head back for lunch without any faffing about. Not a destination in itself, but a proper woodland experience when you need to get away from the caravan for a few hours.
