Memorial to the Great Exhibition

The Albert Memorial looms up out of Hyde Park like a Victorian fever dream in gold leaf and marble. It's a colossal monument to Prince Albert, built after his death in 1861, and it absolutely dominates its corner of the park with unapologetic excess. The thing is genuinely massive - all soaring gothic arches and intricate stonework, with Albert himself perched beneath a gilded canopy holding a catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851.

You don't really "do" anything here in the traditional sense. It's a walk-up monument, best appreciated from the surrounding paths where you can take in the sheer theatrical ambition of it all. History buffs will spend a good forty minutes examining the details and reading the inscriptions. Children get a kick out of spotting the sculptures - there's a zoo's worth of creatures carved into the thing. On a clear day, it photographs brilliantly from across the Serpentine.

The real strength is its position within Hyde Park itself. You're not travelling for the memorial alone - you're combining it with a proper park walk, maybe grabbing a coffee at one of the cafes, wandering towards Kensington Gardens. It's free to view from outside, though restoration work does occasionally restrict access. If you're staying at Lovat Parks nearby, it's an easy dash into the city for an afternoon.

Truth be told, it's more impressive than profound. But as a snapshot of Victorian confidence and memorial culture, it's genuinely hard to beat.
