Melton Constable - A Railway Village

The railway came to this corner of Norfolk in 1882, and the village that grew around it is still defined by those rails. Melton Constable was built from scratch as a railway works village - the sort of place where the engine sheds dictated the town plan and half the residents worked for the railway. Walking through it now, you're looking at Victorian terraced houses arranged in neat rows, the old station building, and the ghosts of industrial purpose.

It's a proper piece of railway heritage, though you need to manage expectations. There's no museum here, no visitor centre with interactive displays. What you get is the landscape itself - the layout of the village, the architecture, the sense of how a Victorian railway company shaped a community from nothing. History enthusiasts will find it absorbing. Families with young children might struggle unless they're genuinely interested in how things used to work.

The whole visit works as an easy walk combined with other North Norfolk attractions. Melton Constable sits roughly between Norwich and the coast, close enough to Cromer for a day out, and the nearby caravan parks - Old Brick Kilns is particularly well-rated - make a good base for exploring the railways heritage trail and the wider Norfolk landscape. Allow an hour for a decent wander, longer if you're serious about the industrial archaeology. There's no admission charge; you're simply walking a village. Go when the weather's settled, as there's little shelter once you're in the village itself.
