Melsonby Village Green

The village green at Melsonby sits quietly between Richmond and Scotch Corner, the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't paying attention. It's a proper working green - sheep graze here, locals use the footpaths, and there's none of that manicured tourist-attraction feel that winds you up.

Walkers get the most from this one. The green itself is modest, but it's a launching point for a network of paths that drift through the surrounding countryside without the crowds you'd find at bigger reserves. You can wander for an hour or lose an afternoon depending on how far you fancy going. Spring and early summer are best - the wildflowers come through properly, and bird activity picks up.

It's free to access, which helps. Melsonby isn't a destination you'd drive hours for on its own, but if you're camping at Hewn Yorkshire just two miles away, it's absolutely worth an evening walk. The green works perfectly as a break from the caravan site, letting you stretch your legs without needing a packed lunch and proper hiking boots.

There's something about Yorkshire greens that feels right - less Instagram, more honest. It won't blow your mind, but it's the kind of place that reminds you why you came to the Dales in the first place. Richmond itself is worth exploring if you're in the area, but Melsonby is the quieter, less obvious alternative.
