Melsonby Playing Field

Just outside Richmond, Melsonby Playing Field is one of those local nature reserves that doesn't make the glossy guidebooks but absolutely should. It's a working landscape - part grassland, part woodland - where you can actually spot something rather than just walk round empty paths ticking boxes.

The reserve sits on decent terrain with a mix of open meadows and tree cover, which means birds love it. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting warblers and woodpeckers; casual visitors will still catch plenty of activity without them. The walking isn't strenuous - it's more of a potter than a hike - so it suits families with younger kids or anyone not wanting to bash up a fell.

Timing matters here. Spring brings migrants through, summer's thick with wildflowers if the management's been decent that year, and autumn offers decent birdwatching. Winter can feel a bit exposed and muddy, though that's hardly a deal-breaker.

It's free to access and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending on how much time you want to spend just standing about watching things. Real bonus: it's only a couple of miles from Hewn Yorkshire if you're staying on a park holiday nearby - means you can pack in a proper nature session without driving across the county.

Won't blow your mind, but it's proper worth the detour if you're already in Richmond and want to see what actual Yorkshire wildlife looks like beyond the gift shops.
