Melsonby Playground

Melsonby Playground sits just outside Richmond, a sprawling nature reserve where the River Swale cuts through proper moorland. It's the kind of place that rewards a decent walk - paths wind through woodland and open grassland, offering views across the Pennines on a clear day. The real charm is how unspoilt it feels. You won't find manicured lawns or visitor centres here; it's genuinely wild.

Families with older kids will get the most out of it. Younger ones might flag on the longer routes, but there are shorter loops around the woodland edges that work fine for a morning outing. Walkers love this place because it connects to broader trails across the moors - you can easily spend two or three hours here without backtracking. History buffs will appreciate the riverside setting; this area has been worked for centuries, and you catch glimpses of old industrial heritage mixed in with the natural landscape.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no facilities that I could find - so come prepared. It's free to access, which is brilliant. Spring and early autumn are ideal; the moorland can get boggy in winter. If you're staying at nearby Hewn Yorkshire, Melsonby makes an excellent half-day excursion before heading back to base. It's the sort of place that separates proper outdoor types from those just after an Instagram shot, and that's entirely the point.
