Mellbreak

The path up Mellbreak starts unassuming enough near Cockermouth, but this fell rewards walkers with proper views across the Lake District's quieter western edge. It's not a bruising climb - around 1,500 feet - which makes it genuinely accessible for families who want something beyond a flat stroll but won't take all afternoon.

Once you're up there, the fell opens out to show you Crummock Water laid out below, pale and still on calm days. The rocky top feels earned without being exhausting. On a clear morning, you can pick out the higher peaks to the south and east, but what makes Mellbreak special is that fewer people bother with it than the more famous summits. You'll see walkers, sure, but not crowds.

Allow three to four hours for the round trip if you're taking it steady. The descent is straightforward, though your knees will know about it. Early spring or autumn are best - summer can draw midges, and winter requires proper boots given the stone underfoot.

It sits nicely within a broader Lake District walking holiday. Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite, just a few miles away, gives you a proper base for exploring the quieter western fells without fighting for parking at the honey-pot valleys. Mellbreak pairs well with walks around Crummock Water itself or pushing on to Scale Force if you've got energy left. It's the kind of fell that doesn't make the guidebook covers but absolutely makes your holiday feel like you've actually explored something.
