Melchet Park

You won't find crowds at Melchet Park - it's a proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction, and that's exactly what makes it worth the trip from Salisbury. The reserve sprawls across chalk downland and woodland, the sort of place where you actually see what you came for: buzzards, skylarks, maybe a kestrel if you're lucky. The walking trails wind through grassland that shifts seasonally, from spring wildflowers to summer insects thrumming through the air. There's a real sense of landscape here, not a theme-park version of nature.

Historians and ecologists will find plenty to occupy themselves - the reserve protects rare plant species and offers genuine insight into Wiltshire's natural heritage. Families with older kids and keen walkers fare better than those expecting easy accessibility or facilities. You'll need to allow two to three hours minimum to do it justice, and proper boots help if recent rain has softened the ground.

Being free and unfussy about opening hours, it works brilliantly as a half-day add-on during a park holiday at Green Hill Farm Holiday Village, just down the road. The combination lets you balance the comfort and amenities of a proper campsite with a few hours of actual countryside. Spring and early summer are best - the light is sharper, the birdlife more active, and you'll dodge the worst of the tourist season entirely. It's not flashy, but it's genuine.
