Melbury Hill

The walk up Melbury Hill from Shaftesbury is short enough that you won't regret it, steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the view. It's the sort of local spot where you spot families with pushchairs attempting the climb on a Sunday afternoon and then having to turn back halfway. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic stone markers or viewfinders - but the views across the Dorset landscape are genuinely worth the huff and puff, especially if you time it for late afternoon when the light does something proper with the ridges and valleys below.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate that this is ancient Dorset, shaped by centuries of farming and settlement. The area around Shaftesbury itself is loaded with Saxon and Norman history, and standing up here you get a real sense of why people bothered building towns in these particular spots.

Walkers with decent legs will knock this out in under an hour from the town centre. Bring the kids if they're half-decent hikers - the reward of views and open air tends to motivate them more than a flat path ever could. It's free, obviously, being a hill. Winter's actually lovely here when visibility is sharp and the crowds thin out.
