Melbury Beacon

The walk up to Melbury Beacon from Shaftesbury is what sells it, frankly. You're climbing onto proper chalk downland, the kind where the grass is springy underfoot and the wind picks up as you gain height. The beacon itself is an Iron Age hill fort, so what you're actually standing on is ancient defensive earthworks - ramparts and ditches that are still distinctly visible if you know what to look for. It's not dramatic or showy. There's no structure, no interpretation board, no gift shop. Just a rounded hilltop with tremendous views across the Blackmore Vale towards the Quantocks, and on clear days you can see for miles.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's a genuine destination rather than a casual stroll, and the approach rewards you properly. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the walk tedious and the reward a bit abstract. History enthusiasts should come - there's something compelling about standing where Iron Age people once defended their settlement, even if the physical remains are subtle.

The beacon is free and accessible year-round, though spring and autumn are best for walking. Allow a couple of hours return from Shaftesbury town centre depending on your pace. It pairs well with Gold Hill Glamping if you're basing yourself nearby - the views from up here will feel familiar once you've hiked to them. Worth the effort, though don't expect crowds or facilities.
