Meikleour Beech Hedges

The tallest and longest beech hedge in the world lines the A93 just south of Perth, and it's the sort of thing that stops you mid-drive. Planted in 1746, this living wall stretches for nearly 600 metres and reaches heights of up to 30 metres in places - proper jaw-dropping when you first clock it. You can pull in and walk alongside it, though honestly it's more of a pause-and-stare affair than a full day out. The hedge is thickest in summer when the leaves are full and green; late autumn turns it into something more austere and sculptural. There's no charge, no café, no visitor centre - just you, a seriously impressive line of old trees, and whatever weather Perthshire decides to throw at you. Photographers love it, particularly in golden hour light, and history types appreciate the sheer commitment of keeping something growing and trimmed for nearly 300 years. Kids will find it interesting for about ten minutes unless they're into plants or record-breaking things.
