Meerkats

Edinburgh Zoo's meerkat enclosure is one of those spots that stops you dead. You'll find yourself watching these little creatures stand upright on their hind legs, scanning for danger like furry sentries on patrol. It's genuinely hypnotic - they're social animals with distinct personalities, and if you're lucky enough to visit during feeding time, you'll see them at their most animated.

The enclosure itself is well-designed, giving you decent sightlines without feeling like you're peering through bars. Kids absolutely lose themselves here, especially when the meerkats are active in the morning. Adults tend to linger longer than expected, which says something. Plan on 20 to 30 minutes, though you could easily stretch that if you're the type to sit and observe.

As part of Edinburgh Zoo, it's a paid attraction - entry to the whole park is required, not just the meerkats. The zoo sits within reach of Newbridge if you're basing yourself at Linwater Caravan Park, which is a solid choice for families wanting to explore the broader Lowlands. The park's well-reviewed, and from there, Edinburgh's attractions are close enough for day trips.

Best time is late morning when the meerkats are most active and the crowds are thinner than midday pushes. You won't find a more engaging small-animal experience in Scotland.
