Meallan na Ceardaich

The walk up Meallan na Ceardaich rewards you with proper Highland views without requiring mountaineering skills or a death wish. This modest peak sits just south of Beauly and pulls in walkers looking for something achievable without spending all day on the hill.

It's not a tough slog. The paths are well-trodden and the summit sits at 651 metres, which means you're high enough to feel you've accomplished something but low enough that you won't be gasping for air if you're not a seasoned hillwalker. The real draw is the view across Strathglass towards the northern reaches of the Highlands - on a clear day you'll see proper distance. The forest paths leading up are lovely in autumn, when the light turns everything golden.

Families with teenagers will get on fine with this one. Younger kids might find the walk a bit long for the payoff, depending on how much they enjoy being outside. Expect to give it a couple of hours up and down, depending on your pace. There's no admission charge and no facilities at the summit, so bring water and something to eat.

Cannich Woodland Camping and Caravan Park sits just five miles away, making this a logical morning or afternoon activity if you're staying in the area. It works well alongside other Strathglass walks if you're spending a full day outdoors. The peak itself is quiet compared to the busier hills further west, which is worth knowing if you prefer solitude.
