Meall na h-Aodainn Mòire

The walk up Meall na h-Aodainn Mòire isn't what you'd call a household name, even among serious Scottish hillwalkers - which is rather the point. Rising just over 600 metres near Pitlochry, this modest peak sits comfortably above the crowds that descend on Ben Vane and its fancier neighbours. The approach is straightforward, taking you through mixed woodland before opening onto heather and grass moorland with views stretching across Perthshire to the higher summits beyond. On a clear day it's genuinely worthwhile; on a drizzly afternoon, you'll want proper weather gear and realistic expectations.

It's ideal for hillwalkers after a solid two-hour push without serious scrambling or exposure. Families with older kids who can manage a steady 400-metre climb will find it manageable - the terrain is forgiving and the sense of achievement at the summit feels earned without being punishing. You're looking at three to four hours total if you're not rushing.

The real advantage is location. Stay at Faskally Woods Holiday Park or Milton Of Fonab Caravan Park - both are within striking distance - and you've got multiple outings from your doorstep without the Pitlochry tourist crush. It pairs well with proper Tay Valley exploring. River Tilt Park and Blair Castle Caravan Park offer other bases for a proper hillwalking week. There's no visitor centre, no facilities halfway up, and that's exactly how it should be.
