Meall a' Choire

The walk up Meall a' Choire from Beauly is a proper day out if you're after something less punishing than the bigger peaks round here. It's a modest hill by Highland standards - nothing that'll break you - but the views across the glens make it absolutely worth the effort.

You'll be tramping through mixed woodland for a good chunk of it, which is grand because it breaks up the slog. Once you clear the trees, the landscape opens right out. On a clear day you can see for miles across the Strathglass valley. The summit itself isn't spectacular - you won't be gasping at dramatic ridges or anything - but it's a decent vantage point and significantly quieter than the honeypot peaks further south.

This suits walkers who want a genuine hill day without needing technical gear or spending eight hours on their feet. Kids will manage it if they're steady on their legs, though younger ones might find the pace tedious. History buffs won't find much at the top, so don't go expecting ruins or standing stones.

Allow three to four hours return from the nearest decent parking spot. Spring and early autumn are best - you'll avoid the midges and the ground holds better. It's free, obviously, being an open hill.

If you're camping at Cannich Woodland just down the road, this makes a natural morning or afternoon loop. Pair it with a visit to nearby Glen Affric and you've got yourself a proper Highland weekend without the crowds.
