Meagill's Cottage

The ruins of a Bronze Age roundhouse sit on the Yorkshire moors above Ilkley, unassuming and easily missed unless you know where to look. Meagill's Cottage is what remains of a dwelling that sheltered someone roughly 3,000 years ago - just a low circular wall and some scattered stonework now, but enough to stop you in your tracks when you realise what you're standing in.

It's not a place for drama or spectacle. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation panels, no cafe. What you get instead is solitude and the genuine thrill of archaeology as it actually is - fragments and silence and your own mind doing the work. The cottage sits in moorland that hasn't changed that much in three millennia, which somehow makes the whole thing hit harder.

This is strictly for walkers with patience and a bit of curiosity about prehistory. Kids might find it underwhelming after five minutes unless they're genuinely engaged by the idea of ancient peoples. Most visitors stumble across it as part of a longer moorland walk rather than making it a destination in itself.

If you're camping at Clarion Lodge, just over a mile away, or staying at Moor Valley Country Park or Fairmead Farm Glamping, Meagill's Cottage makes a cracking waypoint on a ramble. Ilkley's close enough for supplies and a proper meal afterwards. Allow 30 minutes here, longer if you want to sit with it and soak in the landscape.
