McKees Dam

The water is the thing at McKees Dam - a proper reservoir that sits between Lisburn and Castlereagh, drawing walkers and bird-watchers in equal measure. It's a nature reserve now, which means the banks are left to do their own thing: rushes, willows, the occasional heron if you're patient enough to wait for it.

The walk around the perimeter takes a couple of hours at a steady pace, though you don't have to do the full loop. The northeastern stretch near Hillsborough is the most interesting - less industrial feeling than the southern end. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Dragonflies in summer are brilliant.

It's the kind of place that rewards turning up without a plan. Sit on a bench for twenty minutes and you'll see what I mean. Kids will get bored quickly unless they're the type who enjoy spotting water birds, but walkers and photographers should block out a good half-day. The light in early morning is particularly strong here.

Free to visit, as far as I can tell, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. If you're staying at Lakeside View Caravan Park nearby, this makes an easy morning outing before heading elsewhere. On its own, though, it's more of an add-on than a destination. Well worth the detour if you're in the Hillsborough area, but don't plan your trip around it.
