McDuff's Monument

Standing on a hill outside Perth, McDuff's Monument is one of those Scottish landmarks that rewards a bit of effort but doesn't demand hours of your time. It's a 19th-century tower built to commemorate a local hero - straightforward stuff, really - and the walk up gives you proper views across Perthshire farmland.

The monument itself isn't massive, and you won't spend long at the top unless you're into the history of whoever McDuff was. But that's rather the point. This is a gentle detour for walkers staying at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Perth Caravan Park, both close enough for a morning expedition. The path is clear enough, though there's a climb - nothing technical, just a bit of huffing if you're not used to hills.

Best visited in decent weather when the views actually open up. Rain and mist turn it into a bit of a trudge with no payoff. Kids might find it dull unless they're the climbing type; teenagers keen on photography could do worse. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour, including the climb and a look around the top.

If you're exploring the area properly - and Perth's got enough going on to justify a few days - this fits as a morning walk before heading into town or onwards to bigger attractions. Free to visit, no facilities at the site itself, so bring water. Don't expect queues or crowds. It's the kind of place that feels like you've found something for yourself rather than ticking off a famous name.
