McCartan's Castle

There's not much left of McCartan's Castle, to be honest. What you're looking at is a low stone ring - the remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress that's been sat on this Newry hillside for about 900 years, slowly surrendering to grass and weather. The mound itself is the impressive bit; you can walk round it easily and get a decent sense of where the wooden palisade once stood.

It's the kind of place that appeals most to archaeology nerds and local history buffs rather than the casual day-tripper. Kids might find clambering over the earthwork entertaining for ten minutes, but there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, nothing to really bring it to life unless you've got a keen imagination or a guidebook. The location near Castlewellan is actually its strongest selling point - you're close enough to combine this with a proper wander round Castlewellan Forest Park or one of the other Mourne attractions without it feeling like a diversion.

Access is free and there's no restriction on when you can visit, though the site's unmarked and you'll need a bit of local knowledge or a good map to find it. The ground can get boggy, especially after rain, so decent boots are sensible. Allow twenty minutes if you're just doing a quick look, longer if you're the type to sit and soak in the medieval vibes. If you're camping at Slieve Croob Camping nearby, it's worth a morning stop, but don't make it your only reason to visit the area.
