Mary Barbour Cairn

A simple cairn marks where Mary Barbour once lived - the Lochwinnoch woman who led the legendary rent strikes of 1915. Standing in Renfrewshire's rolling landscape, it's a fairly modest memorial, but the story behind it packs real punch. Barbour organised hundreds of Glasgow tenants to refuse paying rent whilst landlords profiteered during wartime, and she won. The government eventually froze rents. The cairn itself won't take long to visit - you're looking at five minutes at most - but it's the kind of place that makes you pause and think about what one person's conviction can actually achieve. History types and anyone interested in social movements will find it worthwhile, though families with young children might struggle to generate much enthusiasm about a standing stone in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town is Lochwinnoch, which sits about a mile away and has decent shops and pubs if you're peckish. If you're based at The Pods at Auchenhean - a proper nice spot for a holiday park stay - the cairn could work as a short walk or drive between activities rather than a destination in itself. Free to visit, of course. Best time to go is when the weather's decent so you can actually see the surrounding countryside and grab a photo without getting soaked. Worth the detour if you're already in the area and care about Scottish labour history.
