The play area at Marston Grange, just outside Stafford, is one of those straightforward local spots that does exactly what it says on the tin without any fuss. There's a decent selection of equipment spread across a tidy space - the sort of place where you can actually sit on a bench while keeping eyes on the kids rather than climbing the frames yourself.

It's best suited to younger children, say toddlers through to early primary school age. Anyone expecting something elaborate or theme-park-style will be disappointed, but families after a quick morning or afternoon outing will find it hits the mark. The space feels well-maintained, and you get that particular pleasure of a local park where you're not battling crowds.

Access is free, and there's no charge to turn up. You can easily spend 45 minutes to an hour here depending on your children's energy levels and your tolerance for "one more go" on the swings. The area works well as a stop-off during a longer Staffordshire trip rather than a destination in itself.
