Marshes Hill

A proper walk up Marshes Hill rewards you with views across the Staffordshire moorlands - the sort of spot where you can actually see where you've come from. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but on a clear day the outlook towards Stoke-on-Trent and beyond justifies the effort.

The climb itself takes somewhere between 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace and which route you take. The terrain is moorland typical of this area - underfoot can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are worth bringing. You'll find yourself on open ground for most of it, which means exposure to the elements but also uninterrupted views. Not the sort of place to head in thick cloud cover.

It works best for walkers already exploring the broader Staffordshire moorland terrain rather than as a standalone trip. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Sky View, Castle Camping, or Rudyard Vale are all within a few miles - this slots nicely into a half-day outing alongside exploring the Rudyard Lake area or tackling some of the other moorland walks in the district. Families with keen walkers will get something from it; younger children might find the exposed moorland a bit dull without a defined attraction at the summit.

There's no visitor infrastructure up here - no cafe, no car park facilities to speak of. Go early, go prepared, and check the weather forecast first. It's free, naturally, and it's the sort of walk that feels properly done rather than ticked off.
