Marsham Heath

Marsham Heath is a proper slice of Norfolk's wild side - open heathland that feels genuinely remote even though Norwich's only a short drive away. It's the kind of place where you can actually breathe, with low scrubby vegetation, scattered pines, and enough space to lose the crowds. Walkers get the most from it. There's no marked trail system, but that's rather the point - you pick your line across the heath and potter about for an hour or two without seeing another soul.

The heath itself is the main draw. On a decent day the light cuts through in that particular East Anglian way, and the landscape has a austere beauty that won't suit everyone. If you're after rolling parkland or dramatic scenery, look elsewhere. This is subtle stuff. You'll spot birds, maybe gorse flowering yellow in spring, and from the higher bits you get genuine views across the Norfolk countryside.

It's free to visit and there's no formal opening hours - just rock up. Allow an hour minimum if you're genuinely walking it, longer if you're the type to sit and watch the weather roll in. If you're staying at Top Farm Campsite just down the road, it's an easy escape. Even from Moat Island Glamping (1.8 miles) it's a quick trip for a proper stretch of the legs. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's exactly the kind of place that reminds you why Norfolk's worth a visit at all.
