Marsh Meadows

The Thames floodplain around Henley transforms into something rather special when the water levels rise, and Marsh Meadows is where you get to see that landscape properly. It's a working nature reserve that floods seasonally, creating temporary wetlands that attract waders, wildfowl, and the odd kingfisher if you're patient enough to wait. The walking trails meander through rough grassland and along the water's edge, giving you decent views across the marshes without requiring any real scrambling.

Walkers and birdwatchers will have the most rewarding time here. You can spend a pleasant hour or two pottering about with binoculars, though kids under ten might find it a bit slow unless they're already into spotting things. Bring a proper field guide if you want to identify what you're seeing - the reserves trust you to know your lapwings from your curlews.

Access and timing aren't straightforward online, so ring ahead or check with Henley-on-Thames visitor information before you go. The best visits are late winter through spring when water levels are highest and birds are most active. Autumn migration is decent too. Allow two to three hours maximum.

If you're camping at Swiss Farm or Henley Four Oaks just up the road, this makes an easy morning walk to clear your head before heading into Henley proper. The reserve slots nicely into a broader day exploring the riverside - you could combine it with a walk into town or a paddle further along the Thames. SRB Moorings is brilliant for water-based campers, and Marsh Meadows gives you a quieter counterpoint to the busier riverside attractions.
