Marlowes

The woodland around Marlowes, just outside Coventry, is proper walking country - the sort of place where you can lose a decent chunk of an afternoon without trying. Ancient mixed forest with a network of paths that feel genuinely off the beaten track, even though you're barely six miles from the city centre. The canopy is thick enough that it stays cool even on warm days, and the undergrowth changes completely depending on the season.

It's ideal for families who fancy a walk without the crowds you get at the more famous Warwickshire spots. Kids will enjoy spotting bluebells in spring and hunting for fallen logs to clamber over. The terrain isn't punishing - mostly level woodland floor - so pushchairs work fine on the main paths, though you'll want proper boots if there's been rain.

Seriously keen walkers might find it a bit limited if you're after a proper expedition, but as a morning circuit from nearby Mousley House Farm (a solid caravan park six miles away), it works brilliantly. You can knock out an hour or ninety minutes easily. There's space to breathe here without the Instagram-hunt vibe of some woodland attractions.

No visitor facilities that I could find, so bring water and a packed snack. It's the sort of wood that rewards you for simply being quiet and patient - you'll see far more wildlife if you're not rushing through.
