Markfield Park

The thing that strikes you first about Markfield Park is how completely it absorbs the noise of East London. You're barely five miles from the capital's edge, yet the moment you step through the gates, the city feels miles away. This nature reserve spreads across woodland and wetland, proper Essex countryside that's somehow survived the urban sprawl.

It's the kind of place where you actually see birds - herons, if you're lucky, picking their way through the shallow water. Walkers get a genuine workout here, with paths that wind through different habitats. The wetland areas are the real draw; they've been carefully managed to encourage wildlife, and the difference between the open water and the dense tree cover creates natural pockets where you can genuinely spot something interesting.

Don't expect facilities or crowds. There's a car park, and that's about it. Bring binoculars if you're into birds, comfortable boots regardless. You'll want a good couple of hours minimum to make it worthwhile - rushing through feels wrong.

For families, it works best if your kids are old enough to enjoy spotting wildlife without needing playgrounds or cafes. Serious birdwatchers and nature photographers should absolutely make the trip. It sits nicely alongside a weekend based at Lee Valley Campsite over in Sewardstone, which gives you proper London-edge camping without abandoning nature entirely.
