Market Weston Fen

The fen sprawls out like someone's forgotten the lawn mower for about three decades, which is rather the point. Market Weston Fen, just outside Diss, is a proper working nature reserve where the landscape has been left to do its own thing - reed beds, open water, and marshland spreading across what would otherwise be intensively farmed Suffolk. You walk the perimeter mostly, following paths that wind between ditches and hummocks, binoculars in hand if you're that way inclined. Birdwatchers absolutely love it here. The fen's a magnet for waders, bearded reedlings, marsh harriers, and on a decent day you might spot something unexpected looping overhead. Even if you couldn't tell a bittern from a buzzard, the sheer sense of wildness works on you - it's one of the few places around here where you can walk for twenty minutes and feel genuinely away from it all. Families with young kids will find it a bit limited if the weather's poor (nowhere to shelter, nowhere to eat), but it's marvellous for school-age children learning to actually look at nature rather than just walk past it. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how often you stop. The paths can be muddy even days after rain, so proper boots matter. If you're camping at Arthur's Retreat just down the road, this is a five-minute drive and costs nothing - making it ideal for an early morning or late afternoon potter when you've had enough of the campsite facilities.
