Marja's Waterfall

The walk to Marja's Waterfall isn't long, but it's proper rewarding once you reach it. You're looking at a decent cascade dropping into a rocky pool, the kind of spot that justifies the trek from Durness on the north coast. The surrounding landscape is bleak and windswept - very far north Scottish Highlands - but that's exactly what makes it feel genuine rather than staged.

Getting there means a fairly straightforward walk across moorland. Not technical, but it can be boggy depending on the weather, so decent boots matter. Most people manage it in under an hour return, though you'll want to linger once you arrive. Families with kids aged eight and up would be fine; younger ones might struggle with the uneven ground. Walkers will appreciate the simplicity of it - no complicated navigation, just follow the track and trust the landscape.

It's free, naturally. There's something about remote Highland waterfalls that means nobody's tried to monetise them yet. Best visited when there's been decent rainfall, which isn't uncommon up here. If you're staying at Sango Sands Oasis, it's barely a twenty-minute drive away, making it an easy afternoon excursion before heading back for an early supper.

Is it worth the trip? If you're already in Durness exploring the cape and coastal paths, absolutely. If you're planning a special journey just for the waterfall, manage your expectations - it's lovely, but it won't change your life.
