Mareham Plantation

The woodland here rolls out in proper tidy rows of conifers and broadleaf trees - it's the sort of place where you can lose a couple of hours without trying. Mareham Plantation sits a short drive from Horncastle, and it's genuinely worth the detour if you're after a decent walk that doesn't involve scrambling up a hill or queuing for a visitor centre.

What you get is straightforward: forest paths that wind through established plantings, decent underfoot conditions even after rain, and the kind of quiet you don't often find near a market town. The mixed woodland means it's not all the same tree repeated endlessly - there's variety, which keeps the eye interested. A proper winter walk here clears the head without being taxing.

Families with young walkers will manage fine for an hour, maybe ninety minutes, depending on the kids' pace and your tolerance for "are we nearly there yet?" History enthusiasts won't find much to excavate - this is working forestry, not a heritage site. But if you're based at Oxcombe Campsite or Lincolnshire Glamping and the weather's turned drizzly, it's a solid backup plan. The trees shelter you reasonably well, and you're close enough to Horncastle for a post-walk coffee if needed.

Free to roam, no entry fees that I'm aware of. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit. Spring and autumn are best - the ground's firmer, and you can actually see through the trees without the summer leaf-wall blocking the view. Nothing fancy, but genuinely good for what it is.
