Mardon Down

The walk up Mardon Down rewards you with one of those views that makes you understand why people get sentimental about Devon. It's not the highest point around Exeter, but the vantage from the top is genuinely worth the effort - rolling farmland stretches out in every direction, and on a clear day you get proper sight lines across the county.

It's a straightforward climb that takes about 45 minutes from the car park, making it ideal for families who don't want anything too technical. The paths are well-trodden and the gradient stays manageable. History enthusiasts will find the Iron Age fort remains interesting if underwhelming at first glance - the earthworks are there, but you'll want to do a bit of reading beforehand to really see what you're looking at.
