Mardley Heath

Mardley Heath sprawls across open countryside east of Welwyn Garden City, one of those proper wild spaces where you can actually breathe. It's heathland - rough grass, gorse, scattered trees - the sort of landscape that feels genuinely untamed even though you're only a few miles from suburban Hertfordshire.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this place. The paths are decent enough, and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending on which way you loop it. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which sounds like a drawback until you realise that's precisely why it still feels like something worth visiting. No gift shop. No car park attendant. Just open heath and birdsong.

It's not dramatic - no hilltop views or dramatic vistas. What you get instead is space and silence, which sounds like nothing until you've spent an afternoon here. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might get restless after the first mile. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots matter.
