Manor Pond

There's a proper little pond tucked away near Gloucester that doesn't get nearly the footfall it deserves. Manor Pond is the sort of place where you might spot a heron mid-hunt, or just watch the light change across the water through the afternoon - it's genuinely peaceful, which is rare this close to the city.

It's a straightforward walk around the water's edge, nothing strenuous, and the kind of spot where families with young children can let them loose without worrying about cliff edges or heavy footfall. Pushchair-friendly paths mean grandparents aren't excluded either. The real appeal is quiet. No queue for anything, no entrance fee to stress about - just trees, water, and occasionally some proper wildlife.

You won't spend hours here unless you're serious about birdwatching or bring a picnic with zero intention of moving. Most people allow 45 minutes to an hour, which feels about right for a morning or late-afternoon amble. It works brilliantly as a wind-down spot if you're staying at Baldwin's Brook or Apple Orchard - both excellent parks within easy reach - and need to clear your head between days exploring the wider Gloucestershire countryside. Come early if you want solitude; weekends can bring dog walkers and families escaping the city.

Not Instagram-famous, and frankly that's its best feature.
