Manor of the Archbishop of York

What remains of the Archbishop of York's medieval manor is scattered across fields just outside Beverley - earthworks, ditches, and the faint outlines of buildings that once served as a country seat for one of England's most powerful ecclesiastical figures. It's an archaeological site rather than a reconstructed attraction, so you're looking at bumps in the ground and interpretation boards rather than stone walls or grand ruins.

This is squarely for the archaeology-minded or serious local history types. Casual visitors might struggle to see much beyond pasture unless you've got a decent imagination or know what to look for. The site itself is freely accessible, which is the main appeal - you can wander the grounds and get a sense of the medieval landscape without paying anything or dealing with visitor centre queues.

Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through. Spring and early summer are best, when the grass is shorter and you can actually trace the outlines of the manor's layout. Winter floods the lower ground, which makes navigation a bit miserable.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Butt Farm is closest at just over a mile away - this works as a day walk from your pitch. It's the sort of thing that fits nicely into a broader Beverley exploration rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with the town's Minster and market if you're doing a proper Yorkshire weekend. The site connects you to proper medieval grandeur, even if you have to do some mental reconstruction to see it.
