Manor House Recreation Ground

East of Watford, this modest nature reserve offers a decent escape from the commuter belt without demanding much effort. There's a proper mix of woodland and open grassland here - the kind of place where you can actually hear birds rather than traffic, which is saying something for Hertfordshire.

The walking trails are straightforward and well-maintained. Nothing strenuous, so it works well if you've got younger kids who need to burn energy without you needing a full day's expedition. Families from Fuzzy's Farm, just down the road, often pop over for an hour or so between other activities. It's not going to rival the Lake District, but as a gentle local walk it gets the job done.

The reserve itself is fairly typical - standard woodland paths, some open areas where you might spot rabbits or the occasional deer if you're lucky. Spring and summer are best, when there's actual activity happening. Winter can feel a bit bleak and empty, if I'm honest.

Free to visit, obviously, and you can just turn up whenever. No visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water. Allow a couple of hours if you're dawdling and letting the kids explore, or 45 minutes if you're just after a quick circuit. It's the sort of place that justifies itself if you're staying locally for a week - handy for a mid-holiday breath of fresh air rather than a headline attraction.
